The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Dr. Mohammed Al-Hassan, visited the headquarters of the Iraqi Private Banks League and met with representatives of private banks.
Al-Hassan commended the league’s significant role in supporting the banking sector, emphasizing that it was the first civil society organization he had visited since assuming his position. He also praised the league’s development initiatives, highlighting that the banking sector continues to operate despite the ongoing challenges and stressing the need to support both the banking and private sectors to realign Iraq’s economic trajectory.
For his part, Wadee Al-Handel, Chairman of the Iraqi Private Banks League, welcomed Al-Hassan’s visit, describing it as a key step toward strengthening relations between the league and the United Nations. He noted that this cooperation would contribute to the advancement of Iraq’s banking sector and open new horizons for its role in supporting the national economy.
During the meeting, Ali Tariq, Executive Director of the Iraqi Private Banks League, provided an overview of the reality of the Iraqi banking sector, outlining ongoing efforts to enhance banking services and strengthen the role of private banks in economic development.
He also reviewed key projects and programs implemented by the league, including training and capacity-building initiatives for banking professionals, financial inclusion efforts, and in addition to strategic partnerships with local and international entities aimed at supporting the banking sector and achieving sustainable development in Iraq.
