IPBL Deputy Executive Director participates in Digital Transformation Youth Forum

Ahmed Al Hashimy, the deputy executive director of the Iraqi Private Banks League, participated in the Digital Transformation Youth Forum. Al Hashimy stated that the banking sector, under the supervision of the Central Bank, has the robust infrastructure necessary to drive digital transformation and implement automation and governance effectively, and indicated that the banking sector is at the forefront of this transformation, spearheading initiatives like payroll localization and the widespread integration of electronic payment tools across all government institutions. He explained that indicators for 2023 show that the number of bank accounts exceeded 13.2 million, with more than 19.7 million bank cards issued. Additionally, there are 23,000 points of sale (POS). He added that the volume of bank card payments has seen significant growth, reaching more than 9.6 trillion dinars last year and more than 6.7 trillion dinars in the first five months of this year, reassuring the audience about the increasing adoption of digital payments in Iraq. Expect to rise to over 13 trillion dinars, along with continued growth in POS due to increased demand from retailers. He also affirmed that the technology sector, with its potential to contribute massively to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), may parallel the oil sector through significant investments from private companies and government entities, sparking optimism for the future of the Iraqi economy. In addition, there are startups in the Iraqi market that have benefited from electronic payments in increasing their revenues. Given their significant impact on the future, he called on Iraqi youth to establish financial technology (fintech) companies. Al Hashimy emphasized the importance of the Iraqi government's project to activate electronic collection, particularly noting the successful experience of fuel stations. Their increased use of electronic payments in the retail sector is an inspiring example of the potential of digital transformation.
